Moira Ricci

Orbetello (GR), 1977. Lives in Italy

The artist’s work begins with photographic material, either produced by Ricci herself or borrowed from other sources, which is then assembled in compositions that acquire a new narrative meaning thanks to slow and patient alterations to the original. Flitting eclectically between the various genres of photography, Ricci constantly creates new uses for the medium, paving the way for brand new narrative possibilities. By concentrating on the domestic context, Ricci rewrites the history of her family, anachronistically including her presence as an adult alongside her mother and other relatives, as in 20.12.53 – 10.08.04 (2004‒14), or adding substance and plausibility to local folklore by creating a documentary that is as fake as it is credible: Da buio a buio (2009). The artist has exhibited at many important Italian and foreign institutions, including Spazio Oberdan, Milan (2015), Song Eun Art Space, Seoul (2014), MAMbo, Bologna (2013), Cultural Center Montehermoso Kulturunea, Vitoria-Gasteiz (2011), Centre Pompidou, Paris, Strozzina, Florence (2009), and Viafarini, Milan (2007).
