Mario Airò

Pavia, 1961. Lives in Milan

Having studied under Luciano Fabro at the Accademia di Brera, the young Airò joined a group of artists who stood out on the Milanese scene between the late 1980s and early 1990s. The group set up the self-run space on Via Lazzaro Palazzi with which Tiracorrendo magazine is associated. Ever since the start of his career, he has packed his research with an extensive variety of references, ranging freely from literature to philosophy, art history, architecture and film, guided by what he describes as a “wanderlust.” Following emotional, imaginative and dreamlike logics, the artist gives shape to different materials—images and objects, light and sound—marked by a lightness that sometimes digresses into immateriality, working on both a miniature and an environmental scale. Thanks to this quest for a “hallucinatory vagueness,” Airò is able to combine the everyday sphere with the heights of cosmology, touching lightly upon the spectator.
