Maria Iorio e Raphaël Cuomo

Maria Iorio, Lausanne, Switzerland, 1975; Raphaël Cuomo, Delémont, Switzerland, 1977. Live in Berlin

This artistic duo work together, favoring long-term research and adopting a curatorial approach in order to reconsider the critical power of minor films. Their works, which include films, performances, installations and documents presented in analytical displays, have explored the economies of the visibility of mobility systems in the Mediterranean, both past and present, and the network of different stories of migration, urbanization and cinematography. Iorio and Cuomo have recently concentrated on constructing a many-voiced account of migration from southern Italy to northern Europe, producing a counter-memory of the period of the “economic miracle.” Their work has been presented at the following film festivals: Visions du Réel, Nyon and FID Marseille, Marseilles, in France and Courtisane, Ghent, in Belgium.Recent exhibitions have included: Logica del passaggio, Fondazione Querini Stampalia, Venice (2015); Europe. The Future of History, Kunsthaus Zürich (2015); Twisted Realism, Argos, Brussels (2012); Chewing the Scenery, 54th Venice Biennale (2011); Der Standpunktder Aufnahme, Arsenal, Berlin (2014); The Maghreb Connection, Townhouse Gallery, Cairo (2007).
