After training at the Dutch Art Institute in Arnheim, Netherlands, and at Rhode Island School of Design in the United States, Valentina Curandi (Cattolica, RN, 1980) and Nathaniel Katz (Woodstock, CA, 1975) have worked together since 2008. Their work focuses on the performance of human bodies, exploring concepts of negotiation, interference and identification.They have received the South Florida Cultural Consortium Fellowship (2013) and Iceberg (2009) awards. Finalists at the first Live Works Performance Art Festival at Centrale Fies and Artrakers (2013), they have been artists in residence at Centrale Fies, Trento, the Istituto Italiano di Cultura in Sweden, Hangart, Pesaro, Project Goleb, Amsterdam, Flux Factory and Center for Book Arts, New York, CESTA, Czech Republic, and Lugar a Dudas, Colombia.They have exhibited at Konstfack Stockholm, Title – Passavamo sulla Storia Leggeri (2015), Rural in Action, Bienal del Fin del Mundo, Art Stays, Kunstraum Münich, Galleria Artericambi (2014), ar/ge kunst, Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale, Viafarini (2013), MoMA PS1, Flux Factory, Museo d’Arte Contemporanea Villa Croce (2012), neon>campobase (2011), MEDRAR, and Moscow International Bienniale for Young Art (2010).
An independent choreographer and dancer, Matsushita graduated in 2012 from the Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music & Dance in London, receiving the Simone Michelle Award for choreography. She works as a dancer for Clare Daly Ingvild Isaksen, Cornelia Voglmayr, and Janne Camille Lyester; she has performed for Josiah McElheny, Jeremy Nelson, Leonie Nadler, Rachel Lopez De La Nieta, Marie Gabrielle Rotie, and Susan Sentler. Her works as a choreographer have explored the fusion between object and body, uniting Italian and Japanese actions and questioning common ideas on training, health, beauty and communication. She has been the artist in residence at Residency Unlimited, New York, Mitologie Urbane, Pesaro, Erkki Hirvela Atelier, Finland, Teatro Sperimentale and Hangart, Pesaro, Centrale Fies, Trento, and 4bid Gallery, Amsterdam. She has presented her work at various international festivals, including In & Off Danza inscena, Crash Festival, Neu/Now Festival, ITS Festival, Armunia, Festival Aperto, Festival Ammutinamenti, Civitanova Danza 2.0, Revnedans and Sanafest, Toolkit and Out of Range.
