Alek O.

Buenos Aires, Argentina, 1981. Lives in Milan

Alek O. came to Italy in 2001 to study Industrial Design at the Politecnico di Milano. After graduating, she started producing works made from materials derived from everyday objects belonging to her, her family or strangers. Taken apart and reassembled in different formats, using artisanal procedures such as embroidery or sewing, these objects are transformed and acquire a new life, dryly and dynamically questioning concepts of memory, affection and nostalgia. The wool from an old sweater or odd gloves found in the streets, the faded fabric from blinds or beach towels, and textile sections taken from broken umbrellas, are used to create compositions dictated by fields of color, in modern patterns that help liberate us not from the past but from its weight, giving a second chance to the original materials. Alek O. has exhibited her work in solo shows at private galleries in Italy and abroad, and in group shows at the Castello di Rivoli, Turin (2011), Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, Guarene (2011), Fondazione Giorgio e Isa de Chirico, Rome (2012), Museo di Capodimonte, Naples (2014), Milan Triennale (2015), MACRO, Rome (2015), and Matadero, Madrid (2016).
